Toto was expanding its production facilities overseas, and was doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. The band started out as a group and recorded two albums - 1979's self titled debut, and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The group has a diverse musical background but their biggest success came in 1982 when they released Toto IV.
The album was a major blockbuster, but not without its own set of issues. Record companies put the band on the place with the directive "give us an album that is a success or we'll drop you" and the pressure was on to meet the deadline. Luckily for Toto, they did, with the assistance of the smash single "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is the result of their prior experience. Before forming the group, the members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic trademark has become the standard of '80s music, influencing many contemporary artists.

Despite the turmoil, Toto forged ahead and released Isolation however, which was not as successful as IV. However, the group had a successful chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new vocalist.

Line-up
The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a return to the classic sextet format of the previous albums. It was a stronger, more constant effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The more experimental sound of Turn Back was a reflection of the maturation in the group. The drummer Bobby Kimball's increasing virtuosity was reflected by the vocal delivery of Joseph Williams, who had become more confident and mature. David Paich's keyboard playing was also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous efforts.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album just a few months after and embarked on a world tour support the album. In this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich and Lukather started searching through old tapes and demos for a new album featuring songs that were never recorded before. It was completed as a double-album titled Then and Now in 2001. It was the band's first album without one single track titled "A". The album also contained an previously unreleased track "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The group's fourth record, Old Is New was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from laryngitis, which limited his singing ability. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville and drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia were in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be reformed. The group, which was missing Howe who was working with Yes at the time, was renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The group also had an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
