Origins
Established in 1917, Toto's early years mirrored Japan's economic development. In the first half of 1917, Toto manufactured products to meet the demands for modern, contemporary urban housing. It had the first tunnel kiln in the nation to produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered automation for production control, allowing greater efficiency and a more consistent production.
The company began expanding internationally in the late 1980s in order to profit from new markets and sales opportunities. It established the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other products from other manufacturers to complement its own range of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy increased sales and expanded the firm's market share in the world.
In the 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus to research and development of water-related household appliances. It also redesigned its system of distribution to better serve customers and improve profit. The company also employed the just-in time approach in its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a greater level customer satisfaction.
Toto continued to innovate toilet technology. Its most recent toilet, for example, has an extremely powerful tornado flush that is more ecologically green than traditional toilets. The company also uses recycled water in its manufacturing process and has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets Toto produces bathtubs and faucets, as well as hand dryers that are more efficient in terms of energy consumption than typical models.

The museum houses bathrooms with a WASHLET and other toilet innovations.
Before the formation of Toto members of the group did sessions with various musicians. They also played on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
With a name as evocative as Asia you'd think that the group would be prog queens and kings however, it's actually a fairly simple rock band. The album begins hard with tracks like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. The album also has some more mellow, jazzy tracks, like The Little Things and Chinatown. The album concludes with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and distortion AOR which could appear completely unnatural, but actually works extremely well.
After Toto IV, the band's fortunes began to wane. David Hungate left the band to focus on his solo career. The band had a variety of drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the wake of drug charges and the band continued as a trio featuring Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. However, the group was able to release a chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was also the first to feature a new singer, Simon Phillips.

Line-up
The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet style of previous albums and was a stronger, more consistent effort with an edge that was more pronounced than Hydra. The more edgy sound of the album reflected the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and an improved, mature vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard work was also sharper, more complex, and less derivative on previous efforts.

After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live performance in Amsterdam which was released as a set of two CDs entitled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The group released their new studio album just a few months after and embarked on a world tour help promote it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that hadn't been recorded prior to. The album was released in 2001 as a double album titled Then & Now. It was the band's first album without a single song titled "A". The album also contained a previously unreleased track called "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and the vocalist Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis condition that limited his singing abilities. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville, while drummer Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes and the other members of Asia--Wetton, Palmer, and Howe--convened an event in England in the early part of 2006 to discuss the possibility of officially reforming the band. This lineup, minus Howe who was working with Yes at the period, was later renamed Toto XIV. They toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also had an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
